How to pay

The currency that one should take when visiting fuerteventura is the Euro, the currency used in parts of the European Union, adopted 01 January 1999 by 11 member states [Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, Ireland, Luxumburg, Holland, Austria and Finland. Greece changed to the Euro in 2001]. There are other countries beloning to the European Union that have not adopted the use of the Euro as currency. These include Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

There are 8 different coins including 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 Euros. There are also seven notes of different value 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euros. The diagrams on the coins are common to all the European Counties but the symbols vary depending on the country. The different coins can be used indifferently in all of the European Community.

The designers of the Euro included a series of elements that would help the different coins and notes be recognised simply by touch.

A series of security measures have also been incorporated that help recognise false notes [the impresion on the reverse is unmistakable to the touch, the coincidental elements on both faces of the note, the changing diagram of the flag etc], and the same with the coins [the use of different metals at minting point, the legend and song of the coin].

Tourists from countries that do not belong to the European Union can change their currency by showing their passports at banks. A commission is charged for this transaction.

Tourists will also be able to change their currencies in a Bureau de Change and this is more economical than changing their money at a bank. They can also use the currency changing services offered at travel agencies and at the majority of hotels.

If preferred, credit cards can be used to pay for items in almost all shops. The most accepted credit cards are the Euro-Master Card, Visa, American Express and Diners Club [Diners however, is not accepted in all establishments]. Travellers cheques are also accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops but passports need to be shown.
